Alliance Visits Economic Powerhouse South Korea

You may be familiar with the fact that South Korea is home to highly successful companies like Hyundai and Kia Motors, but few people realize that it is actually the birthplace of dozens of corporate giants. Other industry titans that call South Korea home include Samsung, LG, and Hanjin Shipping. South Korea is a burgeoning economic superpower, with a gross domestic product that exceeded $1 trillion as of 2010. In 2008, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) named South Korea the "World's Hardest-Working Country," citing a corporate culture that values long hours and a cooperative government.

Winds of Change Lead to the Windy City

HREDA has selected Chicago as one of our areas of concentration for 2011 for a myriad of reasons. As a major business hub, Chicago is ripe with prospects looking to either relocate or expand their current operations. In fact, one project from Chicago has already short-listed our region and is expected to make a location decision this year. In addition, Norfolk Southern's $320 million "Heartland Corridor" project will cut 250 miles and a day's transit time from Chicago to Norfolk.

Regional Executives join HREDA in New York

On May 3, Governor Bob McDonnell – along with Arlington County, the Greater Richmond Partnership, the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership – hosted a luncheon at New York City's 21 Club for approximately 100 executives from New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. The luncheon provided an important opportunity to extend the marketing reach of the participating economic development organizations and demonstrate the mutually supportive relationship between the corporate and economic development communities in Virginia. een the corporate and economic development communities in Virginia.

1 of 28: Alliance retains top status

The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) has once again recognized the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance as one of 28 Accredited Economic Development Organization (AEDO). The Alliance is pleased to have maintained AEDO status since initially being accredited in 2004. The IEDC is the largest membership association serving economic and community development professionals in North America.
